We are looking for applicants with community outreach or customer service experience to provide public benefits screening and assets building consulting for low income households as part of our VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) Program. This temporary position will extend from mid-January to April 15, 2009. Schedules will range from 30 – 35 hours per week, with some weekday, weekend and evening hours. All Customer Service Specialists will receive on-site training on opening credit union accounts, and will be required to attend a one day training on public benefits screening.
Responsibilities
• Promote the use of credit union accounts and other cost-effective, asset building products for tax payers;
• Encourage taxpayers to open SaveNYC accounts;
• Identify taxpayers who would benefit from credit counseling services;
• Screen and assist eligible filers with Food Stamp enrollment applications;
Qualifications
• Bilingual Spanish/ English skills required;
• Excellent organizational skills;
• Acute attention to detail;
• Experience with direct client services
• Knowledge of benefits system generally, or food stamps enrollment specifically, is preferred
• Ability to interact with the public, other staff and volunteers in an outgoing, friendly, helpful and supportive manner;
• Willingness to work with diverse groups of people in a non-traditional setting;
• Dependability, patience and flexibility;
• Commitment to economic empowerment of low income people and communities.
